According to De Faria, an executive of MTN, “the time when operators could dictate what they offered to customers is over…Operators need to go into partnerships with content providers to offer services and provide rich content in terms of music, gaming, entertainment and news. Even though consumers view “entertain me” as the second highest most valuable attribute of the mobile phone, after “helping me find new information,” the limited skills and expertise in the entertainment industry and the development of content for mobile, has lead to limited growth in the sector in Africa, leading to a huge gap between the demand and supply of content for mobile phones, but most importantly, entertainment content for the mobile phone.
